The 10KB cap shows up almost exclusively in Indian government and banking exam portals. UPSC, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO, RBI Grade B, NDA, and dozens of state-level boards specify that the candidate's signature image must not exceed 10KB. The photo itself is usually allowed 20KB or 50KB, but the signature is almost always capped at 10KB.
The challenge is that even a clean white-background signature scanned at the lowest scanner setting typically comes out between 30KB and 150KB. You can't email it to a friend for compression — exam portals time out. You need it done in under a minute, right before you upload.
For signatures, JPG is almost always the right choice. A 200×80 pixel JPG of a signature on white paper compresses cleanly to under 10KB with no visible degradation. PNG files at the same size tend to be 3–4× larger because PNG is lossless and retains every pixel of the white background exactly.
If your exam portal specifically requires PNG, our tool handles that too — just be aware that colour photographs in PNG format may struggle to reach 10KB without looking blocky. Convert photos to JPG first, then compress.

For a typical black-ink signature on white paper, 10KB is more than enough to stay legible. Problems usually appear when the signature has a coloured background or very fine detail. Scanning on white paper in black-and-white mode before compressing produces the best results.
Try resizing the image dimensions first. Exam portals typically specify a maximum dimension (often 140×60 pixels for signatures). Reducing dimensions from 800px wide to 200px wide dramatically reduces file size even before compression. Use our main tool to resize by pixels, then compress.
Portals check that you are at or below the limit, not at an exact value. 9.8KB, 8KB, or 6KB all pass a 10KB limit. Go lower rather than trying to hit 10KB precisely.
