Cropping removes pixels from the edges of an image — the content that remains is not scaled or altered, just trimmed. Resizing scales all the content up or down, changing the pixel dimensions of the entire image. If you need to remove a distracting background, centre a subject, or change an image's aspect ratio without scaling the content, crop. If you need the image to be a specific pixel size, resize — or resize after cropping.
For reference: Instagram square posts require at minimum 1080×1080px; landscape posts are 1080×566px; portrait posts are 1080×1350px. Facebook profile photos display at 170×170px (upload at 400×400 or larger). LinkedIn profile photos: 400×400px minimum. For platform-specific requirements, enter the exact width and height in pixels to crop to that precise size.
For PNG input, cropping is perfectly lossless — no quality reduction. For JPG input, the cropped region is re-encoded as JPEG. At 95% quality, the output is visually identical to the source for the preserved region.
