Where 30KB comes up as a limit

30KB is a less common target than 20KB or 50KB, but it appears in specific places:

• State government job portals (India): Several state public service commission (PSC) recruitment portals specify separate limits for photographs (typically 20–50KB) and signature scans. Some, including certain state education board forms, land on 30KB for the signature field specifically.
• Online examination registration forms: Board and university exam portals — particularly older ones — cap signature uploads at 30KB when they were configured before higher limits became standard. The photo limit on the same form is often 50KB.
• Digital identity document uploads: Some state-level ration card, voter ID correction, or property registration portals set a 30KB ceiling for supporting photographs.
• School and college admission portals: Centralised admission systems (for engineering, medical, and undergraduate admissions in several states) frequently set per-file limits between 20KB and 50KB, with 30KB appearing for passport-sized photographs.

What 30KB looks like in practice

At 30KB, a JPEG photograph of a face (the typical exam photo use case) will still look clean at passport-photo dimensions — roughly 200×200 to 400×400 pixels. Artefacts become visible only when you zoom in above 100% or when the source image had a complex background with fine texture.

A signature scan compresses to 30KB with very little visible loss because black-on-white line art is inherently low in colour information. The challenge with signatures is sharpness: if the original scan was taken at low resolution (under 300 DPI), the compressed version may look blurry. If your portal rejects the signature, check the pixel dimensions first — many portals enforce a minimum width alongside the file size limit.

PNG files are typically larger than JPEG at the same visual quality for photographs, but for signature scans the gap narrows. A clean black signature on a white background as PNG can often hit 30KB without any noticeable loss. If yours comes in too large as PNG, converting to JPG before compressing usually solves it.

Dimensions to use with a 30KB photo

For exam portal photographs, most portals specify both a file size limit and a pixel dimension range. Common requirements are 200×200 to 600×600 pixels. Compressing a 4000×3000 pixel camera photo directly to 30KB forces very heavy compression — the quality hit is avoidable. Crop and resize to the required dimensions first, then compress. The result at 30KB will look significantly better.
